Two Down Ten To Go

It’s March already and so far this year has been a ripper.

As you know I’ve been surfing and I did do a little training again thanks to the Play Station move, (don’t let people mock how good this thing is for losing weight, I would spend an hour on the boxing game and be drenched, puffing and needing a rest which is perfect for weight loss) so I quickly dropped 5kgs. Not bad since It didn’t feel like work and it certainly wasn’t hard (in my mind). Unfortunately I’ve reached one of those plateaus so now it’s either increase the workload or decrease the calories….neither one of which sounds enjoyable.

The surfing has been awesome with some fantastic barrels on Wednesday this week at a new beach break we found, I wasn’t happy with the amount of horse poo that was on the beach though (local horse trainers use that section of the beach for running their horses on) so not sure when the next trip to that spot will be.

This year I have been in the process of selling off my last business in Australia which with a bit of luck will occur in the next few days and at the same time kicking off a couple of new ventures.

Planet Homes is the latest start up and this will build sustainable homes here in New Zealand, it’s an exciting project and it seems the timing is just about perfect as NZ faces severe housing shortages. If anyone out there is interested in investing with us we need to build some show homes.

The other project is a Financial services business that is able to offer banking services worldwide with a couple of gents from Australia. Wyk has been in New Zealand for about 3 years now but had been sitting dormant until November last year when we decided to register it as a New Zealand Financial Service Provider (FSP).

The web business trucks along and gets better and better everyday as I learn more and the more I learn the more excited I am about the business.

And of course we had little Katherine 2 weeks ago today.

Awesome.

Surfs Up

At 4.55am this morning the alarm went off and after only 2.30 minutes of sleep I can tell you that I was not leaping out of bed and rushing down to the car, instead I lumbered down the hall in a very sleepy manner, grabbed a quick cup of coffee, through the boards in the car and quietly limped my way down to Port Waikato.

Today the surf was a pretty decent size being about twice my height on the face with no wind so I was rather stoked once arriving that I had made the effort to get up and get on my way.

I spent about 2 and a half hours in the surf today, most of that time I was paddling so the shoulders are feeling a bit on the tired side at the moment.

Quishes Cakes and Huge Salads

Today I hit the sub 107 mark weighing in at a svelte 106.8kgs.

No bad for eating chocolate cake and gorgeous little biscuits (which I don’t know the name of) at a birthday party.

I mentioned in the last post that I would talk about my comment on increasing the amount of food I eat which for most people sounds counter intuitive when they are dieting. In fact anyone who saw what I eat each day would not believe that I am losing weight until they hadn’t seen me for a couple of weeks.

Anyway the first part of the eating more concept is the fact that I am doing more exercise and therefor I need more fuel to get through the day and maintain the muscle mass that I have built over the years of training. the second part of the concept is that I want my body to understand that there is an abundance of good, healthy and nutritious food available so that it won’t go into starvation mode.

I also want it to kick into overdrive on the fat burning side. That part comes a little more from the styles of training that I am doing and the mental conditioning that I am providing myself with. You see the body knows instinctively what it needs for certain conditions, i.e if we were at the south pole it would instinctively know that we need more fat to keep us warm and as a source of fuel for long winter nights.

When I box and surf I am telling my body because of the high intensity type exercise I am doing that I need to be lean, get rid of the fat as it slows me down and replace that fat with nice lean muscle, so even though I have only lost 3 and a half kilograms my clothes are fitting in very different ways, i.e my pants are falling off and my shirts are getting tight across the shoulders and loose around the middle. Excellent.

I’m not sure they training I am doing will bring back my freaky forearms for my wife (in fact I know it won’t as i am not weight training) but I do know that the next time I am paddling out into the smaller surf the wave count won’t be quite as much in Marks favor as it was last time.

Losing Weight

surfing port waikatoAs a competitive body builder many years ago (and a successful one at that) I learnt just how quickly you can put weight on and take it off again when it is competition time.

I used this knowledge and skill to both put on a lot of weight in the body building off season and so I could add some size for the rugby season. I also used this knowledge to lose weight incredibly quickly when it was time to compete in my regional comps and then the nationals.

This knowledge also became quite useful when I started competing in martial arts at both the regional and national levels. The ability to lose 20 to 25 kgs in 12 weeks was very useful however it has also created a problem later on when I started to work out less and continued to eat similar portions to what I was eating while I was training.

Every time I was asked if i would lose some weight or look to trim fat and gain muscle I always said, hey no problem, I can do that and it only takes 12 weeks. This of course means I can leave it until I really want to lose the weight.

Anyway over the last 5 years I have trained about 10% of what I used too and admittedly I did drop back on how much I ate as well, however I have still managed to redesign my body and convert much loved muscle into delightful (to the children) wobbly masses.

This became most apparent when Rebecca said to me one day “Sweety your forearms have shrunk” to which I replied “no they haven’t you are just getting used to my massive muscles”. “No Sweety” she said “You used to have freaky huge forearms, and now they are just big”.

So one day recently, to prove my point I grabbed my diary with measurements, weight, training details etc in it and a tape measure and promptly gave myself a heart attack. I had lost 3 inches from each forearm and 2 inches on my biceps which to a bodybuilder is worse than losing a testicle. So a total of 10 inches had been lost from my forearms and biceps…however all is not lost…in fact we found exactly where those massive muscles had gone…my tummy had grown 10 inches in the same time.

So I had been 110kgs and I still am however most of the mass around my shoulders, back chest and arms had moved downwards and the look is not quite as impressive as it once was.

Over the last 2 years I had also pretty much stopped surfing which recently has changed and it is this change which has made me decide not to redistribute the weight but to actually get rid of it… 15 kilograms in fact.

You see when I go paddling out with my surf buddy mark (my height but only 70 kgs) it is rather obvious that carrying an extra 40 kilograms over him means one thing and one thing only…he will catch more waves!

When you watch someone catching waves that you can’t even get started on (they are too small) you have to do one of two things:

1. Buy a long board which is not my style of surfing so that’s the option of last resort

2. Lose some weight and get fitter.

So option number 2 it was. I weighted myself (110.2 kilograms) and set my goal at 95 kilograms which will be an exceptional weight for me to be surfing at.

The actual date I set this goal was 2 weeks ago and today I am 107.2 kilograms without too much trying.

The main differences I have done over the last 2 weeks is include a lot more exercise in my day (mostly boxing sessions) and started eating more (that may sound counter intuitive but I will explain, probably in another post as i think I’m at my limit for writing in one day).

My First Post For 2011

Today is the 1/01/2011

That’s not a fibanacci sequence and as I mentioned to my father inlaw a few moments ago it’s not binary.

It is a Saturday.

Facebook asks us what are we thinking about…or at least it used too, I’m not sure now, anyway, going back to the Facebook question, “what am I thinking about?”

Firstly I’m thinking about what to write, after all it is the first day of the New Year and surely there will be some insightful things springing into my mind…

So far this morning I have sat and contemplated the Manuka tree’s in our bay as I smoked a fish on the BBQ for morning tea,

I thought about Alex, my little boy who was playing with a bucket and various toys in the sunshine.

I thought about Bailey my 6 year old who I am about to pick up from the airport.

I thought about my new baby on the way (due in Feb) and I thought about my wonderful wife.

All this thinking about my great family and the wonderful relationships I have with them then lead on to thinking about my incredible friendships and how very lucky I am to know some amazingly incredible people.

This process of thinking about the wonderful things you have in your life which you can be thankful for is something I do regularly, it’s called an appreciation session and it allows you to think about the great things you can be grateful for in your life. It’s one of the ways that I use to stay incredibly positive all of the time, no matter how bad things are in other areas.

You see it is easy to focus on the negative things just as it is easy to focus on the fantastic things so my belief is that I might as well concentrate on the wonderful things in my life and be grateful for them.

This doesn’t mean I ignore any of the things that are not perfect in my life but it does mean I approach each situation in a very positive frame of mind.

If I can change something I do what ever I can and if I can’t i don’t fret or worry about it. You see worrying about things you have no control over is one big fat waste of time.

Anyway I got sidetracked and didn’t finish this post so I think I’ll just publish it and start something new in a day or so.

1st Mortgage Money

1stMortgageMoney.com

Back in the day when I was mortgage broking this was a great domain name and website for picking up leads for my mortgage broking business.

These days the leads go to waste and I basically use the site as one of my STORMS or simple to operate revenue machines.

The site generates revenue when people click on an advert.

At the moment I am working on a way of monetising the leads so if you are a mortgage broker and you would like a pretty cost effective way of getting mortgage leads drop me a line.

Our Baby VS2

Well we can now tell the world that we have another baby on the way.

Alex and Bailey have a sibling on the way.

The experience with Alex and Bailey has been magnificent, with both boys adoring each other, so it will be interesting to see how things pan out with the new sibling as the age differential will be quite a bit less than the one between Bailey and Alex.

When baby number 3 arrives there will only be a little over 2 years between TJ (the affectionate nickname all of my children get until they are named, it’s Terry Junior after all until they develop their own personalities) and Alex. The differential between Alex and Bailey was 4 years so Bailey was really able to understand things like being gentle with the new person who was suddenly in our midst. Alex still hasn’t figured out gentle as bruises on various parts of my cranium will attest to.

In about 8 weeks time we will be able to find out if we are having a boy or a girl and being parents who like the idea of being prepared we will have the person taking the 20 week scan inform us of our babies gender.

Until then, enough about babies. 🙂

20,000 tweets

I am fast approaching 20,000 tweets, in fact as I start writing this I am at 19973 so before I go re-tweeting a few friends, replying to others and saying hello to my buddies I thought I should make the 20,000 tweet a worthy one.

By the time you read this and if I organise things correctly this should be my 20,000th tweet.

At 10,000 tweets I had seen others make a significant effort to mark the milestone and all I did was write doh!

Tweet number 10,000 was a dud so I thought I should perhaps make more of an effort for 20,000th tweet.

Part of that inspiration comes from the exceptional 10,000 th tweet that my friend from twitter @vaughndavis did to mark his 10,000 tweets and the blogpost that goes with it..

Vaughn had some great insights in his post which made me wonder about my style of tweeting but before we go there, let me explain why I got onto twitter.

Why Do I Use Twitter?

As someone who has spent their life selling “stuff” to people, I read an article written by @GuyKawasaki stating that if you were in sales or marketing and you were not on twitter then you were not in sales or marketing. That was enough for me… I joined that day and have loved twitter ever since.

Now the above paragraph is the reason why I started with twitter way back in the Christmas week of 2008 however the reason why I use twitter today is very different to that original reason.

As someone who made a small fortune from selling and most of that came about because I spent a lot of time networking, twitter was like the holy grail. Wow I can network with thousands of people now rather than just tens. I can network with folks in Canada, London, New York , Australia and right around the corner.

People I would never have met or spoken to before I can now chat with, interact with and develop a relationship with that ranges from a casual hello all the way through to terms of endearment (yes I feel very fondly about some of my twitter friends).

Without twitter ….

  • I would not have realised that I like Gelato.
  • I would not know about the book the “bowling through india”.
  • I would not know that goats like the dried up palm fronds that fall onto my front lawn.
  • I would not know that a dive mistress is a female dive instructor.
  • I would not have gone to a TV premier
  • I would not have a cameo in an upcoming book
  • I would not have told the world about my first ever king fish catch after 28 years of fishing

In Vaughns post he was able to divulge some great statistics and thanks to the links from his post I can tell you that based on what appears to be a fairly small sampling of tweets from the last few months:

  • I do 78.7 tweets per day…wicked. I did not know that.
  • I average 1196 tweets per month… that sounds like a lot but it’s not really 🙂
  • I tweeted 2423 times in May
  • The top five words I have used are: lol, good, new, nz and thats. – No wonder people think I am happy and positive, again I like that.
  • My top five hashtags are #nz, #property, #singlemalt, #photography and #ff. -I am surprised only by the photography hash tag…

The graph above shows that 62% of all my tweets are actually responding to people sending me @replies …. see I do reply 🙂

Other stats available at Tweetstats allow me to see that I’ve mentioned

I’m am also going to include some of the other observations that Vaughn Made in his post:

  • I said good 288 times compared to bad 40 times…
  • I said lol 311 times and never said I was sad.
  • I said gorgeous 87 times and never used the word ugly
  • I said Love, Friend and buddy 196 times
  • I said thanks 84 times but like Vaughn I never said please (naughty boy) but I have now fixed that.
  • I said cool, great, nice and awesome 534 times –
  • I said yes, sure and yeah 279 times with zero no’s, nuh or nups 🙂

so looking at that lot one would assume I’m a pretty nice guy, perhaps that why my mum loves me 🙂

You can check out all those stats right here and take a look at your own just for fun. http://www.tweetstats.com/graphs/tpr2#tcloud_replies

So what have I achieved in 20,000 tweets?

  • I have made new friends and these friends are like-minded friends, friends who are high achievers, go-getters and leaders, the sorts of people the guru’s tell you that you should surround yourself with…  I’m very happy with that result and if I had achieved nothing else using twitter these friendships would be more than enough reason to continue using twitter and to have justified the time I’ve spent on twitter. These are friendships that I appreciate and cherish.
  • I’ve started a new Real Estate business on the gold coast with someone I met from twitter, it’s the culmination of an 8yr dream to have my very own General Real Estate Agency on the Gold Coast (compared to the niche agency I have had since 2000 which only sourced Real Estate for my Financial Planning clients) and thanks to twitter I not only achieved that but found a new surfing buddy.
  • I was approached to start a new High End Web development business with 2 amazing people who are brilliant at web design and copy-writing but wanted someone who could sell stuff 🙂  ( who knows where that will lead but I am sure it will be fun)
  • I’ve started a joint venture to help teach people how to succeed with 2 amazingly successful people themselves, these two guys have credentials the length of my arm and I appreciate being asked to be a part of the project.
  • I found an old friend who I knew 17 years ago (xxx @blissfulweds)
  • I’ve been paid $28 to send a tweet ( I did identify that tweet as an advertisement)
  • I’ve been to shows like Avenue Q…(thanks @Josiecampbell)
  • I’ve been heard on Wine Vault TV… (thanks @thewinevault)
  • I’ve met and become friends with best selling authors…
  • I’ve met a TV stars
  • I’ve met a Kiwi comic legend…
  • I’ve made friends and lots of them (yes yes, I repeated that bit).

What about the future?

Twitter is opening doors for me like no other medium I know, I am engaging with people I would normally never meet and I am having a ball, I’m enjoying myself so the future of tpr2 and twitter looks pretty Rosie.

Will I do another 20,000 tweets? Just watch me.

Will I make new friends?  You bet.

Will I learn anything new? You can count on it.

Will I achieve anything else from twitter?  It doesn’t matter… if I do, that’s great but twitter has already given me so much already that everything from here on out is a bonus.

Happy 20,000 tweets.
